What is House Into Home?

Every year, Phoemale provides renovations to the home of a woman who is a survivor of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking or homelessness.

Background

2020: A Family of Survivors

Our Phoenix (survivor) was in an abusive marriage for years. Despite divorcing him and being granted full custody of the children, her ex husband continued the abuse; stalking her and the kids and behaving violently. He went to her home, harassed the family, broke windows and vandalized her car.

Fearing for their lives, our Phoenix fled the house with her children and moved from multiple family and friends' homes for months to try and avoid her ex husband. Repeatedly, he would find her, break things and beat her in front of the children.

Finally, after pressing charges, the ex husband is serving 10 years in jail. When she moved back to her home with the children, she found squatters had moved in and vandalized the house further. She got them to leave and now lives in her home that is in dire need of repair.

House Into Home Overview

House Into Home is typically a 3-day effort with 100+ volunteers and two contractors who donate their knowledge and labor.  Last year, COVID-19 complicated things, from social distancing requirements to labor shortages and project delays. So, we focused on smaller projects - one at a time - and extended the timeline over several weeks.

2020 House Into Home: Room by Room

Project 1: Roof

Project 2: Attic into Kid's Study

Project 2: Attic into Kid's Study

The roof was leaking into the house, causing significant damage to ceilings and walls. The first priority was to take off the three layers of roof, re-deck and re-shingle.

Special thank you to Quality Over Quantity Everytime Roofing and Renovations for stepping in to make this happen within one week!

This area was unusable (because of roof damage) but this attic space makes the perfect study room for the five school-aged kids.

We insulated and drywalled; and also added desks/workspaces for each of the children.

Special thank you to Jim Sandercott of RELY-ON Construction for donating the design and labor on this job!

Project 3: Boys Bedroom

Project 2: Attic into Kid's Study

Project 4: Kitchen and Bathroom

Four boys share the upstairs bedroom.  There are now two bunk beds, and painted, provided new bedding and added some chests for storage.

RELY-ON Construction will help us with replacing the windows and fixing the closet door.
